Lebak Membara (1983)
Set in the Japanese colonial era, Herman, who lives in Lebak near Cirebon, is detained by the Japanese for defending his innocent teacher. His arrest doesn’t last long after a summary dismissal by Lieutenant Izumi and Captain Nakamura. The two Japanese officers are worried that Herman’s friends would take revenge. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to their commander, several Japanese soldiers rape Marni, Herman’s girlfriend. This infuriates Herman and he kills several Japanese soldiers. His father and Marni are arrested. Herman flees and joins a group of fighters, who attack the Japanese headquarters. Japan is on the verge of defeat with the atomic bombardment of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and also the arrival of the Allied Forces. Then Indonesia proclaims its Independence. A violent resistance ensues, with Herman among the fighters.
